How the collection is documented, and how attributions and uncertainty are handled.
The objects in the collection are catalogued under stable HC accession numbers (HC-001 to HC-030). Each record gathers the available dimensions, materials, construction details, condition, provenance, inscriptions and marks, together with the photography currently on hand.
A working record
Research is ongoing. Individual entries are prepared from direct examination and the available documentation, and they may be revised as additional photographs, measurements, provenance, inscriptions, marks or specialist assessment become available. Where an object’s date, workshop or origin has not been established, the catalogue says so rather than offering a confident but unsupported attribution.
On attribution and provenance
Attributions are stated conservatively and qualified where the evidence is incomplete — for example, an object may be described as “tentatively attributed to the mid-20th century.” Provenance reported by a dealer or a prior owner is recorded as reported; dealer provenance provides valuable context but does not, by itself, establish the age, authenticity or attribution of a particular object.
Marks and inscriptions
Marks, factory stamps, workshop identifiers and inscriptions are recorded where they are present and legible. Calligraphic inscriptions are noted but are not transcribed or translated unless a reliable reading is available.
Photography
The images presently shown are documentary photographs. Several objects would benefit from higher-resolution studio photography, and the catalogue is structured so that images can be replaced with professional photography as it is produced, without disturbing the underlying records.
